UNESCO’s Mission to Close the Gender Gap in STEM

In an era where innovation is essential to tackle global challenges, gender equality in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) remains a vital yet unmet priority. In a recent report titled Changing the Equation, UNESCO reveals that women still represent only 22% of the STEM workforce in G20 countries. This significant gender disparity not only limits progress but also impacts our collective capacity to address pressing issues like climate change and digital transformation.

UNESCO’s findings highlight that, while women achieve academic results on par with men, systemic biases and discrimination continue to hinder their advancement in STEM fields. Within G20 nations, only 35% of STEM university graduates are women, and this figure drops significantly in specialized sectors such as information technology (29%) and engineering (26%). Additionally, over 40% of women pursuing STEM careers report facing sexist behavior, creating further barriers to their success.

To address these inequalities, UNESCO is urging countries to implement cross-cutting policies designed to support and retain women in STEM. Key recommendations include creating gender-sensitive career guidance, fostering equitable pay, and implementing workplace policies that enable women to balance their professional and personal lives effectively. These measures aim to dismantle barriers and cultivate an inclusive environment that allows women to thrive in their careers.

As part of EFAI’s mission to promote educational equity, we strongly support UNESCO’s call for action. Empowering women in STEM is not just a matter of justice; it is essential for driving innovation and shaping a resilient future. We invite our community to engage with UNESCO’s Changing the Equation report to gain a deeper understanding of these issues and find out how we can collectively contribute to positive change.
